Cross-Flow Filtration

Waste water flows across the membrane surface under pressure and at high velocity. This cross- flow circulation and high turbulence prevents a build of solids on the membrane surface creating a "self-cleaning" filter. Water and dissolved solids continuously pass through the membrane and are termed permeate while oil and suspended solids are retained by the membrane and concentrated further with each pass through the system. Conventional filtration on the other hand is "self-clogging" and causes a "cake" of solids to build-up on the filter surface requiring frequent filter cleaning or replacement.
